The AI-based communication assessment (20–30 minutes) is Tech Mahindra's spoken-English round — and an elimination stage that surprises many technically strong candidates. A working webcam and microphone are mandatory; an AI engine scores pronunciation, fluency, grammar and listening comprehension.
Task types
- Listen and repeat: sentences play once; you repeat them exactly.
- Read aloud: short passages read into the mic — scored for clarity and pace.
- Fill in the blanks: grammar and vocabulary items, sometimes with error identification.
- Listening comprehension: a short paragraph plays, followed by questions.
- Topic narration: speak on a given topic for about 45 seconds — the task candidates most often fumble.
How to prepare in one week
- Read a news article aloud daily at a steady, natural pace — speed is the most common self-sabotage.
- Record 45-second answers to simple prompts (“my favourite subject”, “a project I built”) and listen for fillers like “um” and “basically”.
- Practice listen-and-repeat with any podcast: pause after a sentence and echo it exactly.
- Test your mic and a quiet room setup in advance — audio quality affects the machine score.
Aim for clarity over accent. The engine rewards clear, grammatical, steady speech — not sophistication.
Written English is scored separately in the essay writing test.
