Four weeks is enough to prepare for HCL CAT, Versant and the interview if you are a Class 12 student who was reasonably comfortable with Class 10 maths. The concepts are school-level; the test rewards speed and steady English. Here is a plan that fits around board-exam or college schedules, followed by test-day tactics.
Four-week plan
| Week | Quantitative | Reasoning | English & speaking |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 — Basics | Percentages, ratio, averages, fractions; 15 problems a day from a Class 8–10 book | Number and letter series, coding-decoding | Tenses and subject–verb agreement; read one news article aloud daily |
| 2 — Breadth | Time-work, speed-distance, interest, number system, mensuration | Blood relations, directions, syllogisms, inequalities | Prepositions, error spotting, 10 words a day with antonyms; record yourself speaking for 1 minute |
| 3 — Speed | Timed sets: 20 questions in 20 minutes, daily | Timed sets: 20 questions in 20 minutes, daily | Two 200-word essays on general topics; one comprehension passage a day |
| 4 — Mocks & interview | Two full 2-hour mocks (any school-level aptitude mock works); review every wrong answer | Rehearse the ten interview answers aloud with a parent; Versant-style repeat-and-retell practice | |
Use these pages in order
- Syllabus — tick the topics you already know.
- Aptitude, reasoning and verbal practice sets — attempt untimed once, then timed.
- Computer basics — one sitting, for the interview.
- Graduate-level sets on the HCLTech GET pages if you finish early — same topics, slightly harder.
Test-day tactics for HCL CAT
- Answer every question — there is no negative marking.
- Two passes per section: sure-shot questions first, then the rest; guess whatever is left in the final minute.
- In English, do grammar and vocabulary before the comprehension passage.
- In reasoning, leave seating-arrangement puzzles for last.
- For the essay: two-line introduction, two short paragraphs, one-line conclusion — hit 200 words, check spelling.
- Test your internet, webcam and headset the day before; sit in a quiet room with your ID card at hand.
Bring your parents into the preparation
Walk them through the fee, loan and training structure and the salary page before the interview. Panels ask about family support directly, and a student whose parents understand the trade-offs answers with far more confidence.
Keep other doors open while you prepare: TechBee is one route to an IT career after Class 12, and the same aptitude preparation serves college entrance tests and other early-career programmes.
